Come and visit Aberdeen's Tartan Day - a wide and diverse programme celebrating the culture, language and traditions of the North East of Scotland.
The main components for the day include :-
TOLBOOTH RE-ENACTMENT 11.00am to 3.00pm
Members of the public will have the chance to participate in the trial of a real criminal from Aberdeen’s dark and murky past. In the late 16-Century Harry Domingo Moir was arrested and tried for being a “cut throat…and a cut purse…” For months he had attacked and robbed travellers coming to, and leaving Aberdeen. Having eluded capture for some time the Magistrates eventually arrested him. Visitors to the Tolbooth on Tartan Day will have the chance to hear his side of the story and then cast their verdict on this notorious local highwayman.
TARTAN DAY AT THE TERRACE 1.30pm to 3.30pm
An afternoon Concert in Union Terrace Gardens, celebrating the music, comedy, dance and spoken word of Aberdeen and the northeast. There will be a stage and auditorium in the Gardens, with onstage and on the grass performances from 1.30pm onwards. Acts confirmed include Crann Tara (Battle Re-enactment), Albannach (Traditional Scottish Drums, back by popular demand) SCAT, renowned Scots Balladeer Ted Christopher and The Aberdeen Strathspey and Reel Society. Headline act Joyce Falconer, (Roisin from BBC Scotland’s River City) will add her own inimitable Doric style to the occasion. The Concert will be opened by comedy legend Steve Robertson (Scotland the What?). Compere will be local radio personality Gordon Bathgate (Waves Radio) alongside guest compere Cameron Stout (Big Brother).
THE ROYAL SCOTTISH PIPE BANDS ASSOCIATION MASS MARCH 12 noon
In time to the pipes and drums, approx. 10 bands of the RSPBA leave Albyn Place at 12 noon, marching as one to the Castlegate. A sight loved by generations of Aberdonians and visitors to the city, the parade will take the salute from Aberdeen’s Lord Provost outside the Town House. Some of the pipe bands will then be out and about around the City Centre playing at various venues during the afternoon.
TARTAN DAY PAGEANT PARADE 12 noon
Following on from the pipe bands will be a mass Pageant Parade. Taking part are performers from the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, costumed historic characters, dignitaries, and some special guests, including Davie McKay and Peter Mullen from Mel Gibson’s Multi Oscar Winning Movie “Braveheart, actors from “River City” and a host of other surprises.
FAMILY HISTORY FAIR 11.00am to 4.00pm
Aberdeen's Town House will host the fair. Come along and trace your family ancestry. A wealth of information will be on show.
ST NICHOLAS CHURCH AND KIRKYARD 12 noon to 3.30pm
St Nicholas Church opens its doors to celebrate Tartan Day. Free Tours of this historic church will be given, and refreshments will be served. There will also be traditional Scottish music performances in the Kirkyard throughout the afternoon.
OTHER TARTAN DAY ATTRACTIONS will include street entertainment from the World Famous Big Rory and Company!
So why not make a day of it in the centre of Aberdeen and enjoy this free festival of all that is Scottish.

September 6th
In commemoration to the raising of the Jacobite Standard of 1715. Crann Tara will hold a ceremony at the site where the standard was raised.
Before this we will pay respects to Peter Grant also know as The Old Dubrach ‘ The Kings Auldest Enemy’ who lies in a small grave yard a short distance away. Depending on number we can march or walk up to the site where the standard was raised, which is only a five minute walk. Times and more in depth details will be forth coming. As the queen attends the highland games, which is on that day and passes the spot where the standard was raised, hopefully it won’t create a conflict of interest!!!! or perhaps a possible invite could be arranged to unfurl the standard. |
